The annual Healthcare Systems Process Improvement (HSPI) Conference always reenergizes me. I have been attending the conference for well over 30 years. (Time flies while you’re having fun!) My first conference was in Atlanta in 1983. I missed a few along the way but I always come back. No matter what my role – management engineer, assistant hospital director, Chief Learning Officer, VP of Clinical Services and Quality and now independent business and change management consultant – I always come away with new ideas and reconnect with old friends and find new colleagues that I can reach out to for advice, collaboration and professional camaraderie.

A weekend of learning: An undergraduate’s perspective of the Healthcare Systems Process Improvement Conference 2013

When I first learned about the Society of Health Systems, it was about two weeks before the 2012 national conference in Las Vegas. As an undergraduate student I was right in the middle of midterms and projects and would not be able to spend the time away for my classes, even for Las Vegas. Thus I started planning for the next year to make room to attend the conference and figure out what the heck an engineer actually does in health care. Once I heard the 2013 conference was going to be in New Orleans, I was hoping spring break would be around that time so I could spend more than a workshop filled weekend in The Big Easy, but it didn’t work out that way and luckily too because it was only a high of 40s all week!

CDC ad Campaign Reveals Harsh Reality of Smoking Related Diseases

As HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius notes, hundreds of thousands of lives are lost each year from smoking, though no president in 40 years has had enough votes in congress in both houses to pass a bill to ban sale and use of tobacco products. But, if congress won't act, the Administration wants to do what it can to help people learn what to do to not die from tobacco use. So, HHS has started a "Tips from Former Smokers" to help people who want to quit their dependence on tobacco.

We thought this story by CDC should be seen by as many people as possible as an effort to save mothers and fathers as well as their children and other people from a horrible disease and the likelihood of an early death. "Tips from Former Smokers" Shows Real Lives and Bodies Damaged by Tobacco, Government Says. A hard hitting national ad campaign that depicts the harsh reality of illness and damage suffered as a result of smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke was launched today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Beginning Monday, March 19, ads will run for atleast 12 weeks on television, radio, and billboards, online, and in theaters, magazines, and newspapers nationwide. The "Tips from Former Smokers" campaign features compelling stories of former smokers living with smoking?related diseases and disabilities, and the toll smoking?related illnesses take on smokers and their loved ones.

The ads focus on smoking related lung and throat cancer, heart attack, stroke, Buerger's disease, and asthma. The campaign features suggestions from former smokers on how to get dressed when you have a stoma (a surgical opening in the neck) or artificial limbs, what scars from heart surgery look like, and reasons why people have quit. The ads will be tagged with 1 800 QUITNOW, a toll-free number to access quit support across the country, or the web site, which provides free quitting information.

Everyone has dreams as aspriations, and most of us at one time or another get an opportunity-briefly or extended- to take our shot at it. We may succeed or we might stumble, but whether we are joyful or full of sorrow, the world is not over. And, if one dream is over, other dreams are still buried deep within you, just waiting for a chance to win your heart. Failing is nat a fate as bad as having never tried. And, if you try and fail, then some other part of your sould will get its chance to shine, impressing the world on your behalf.

A heart attack can be a sneaky thing, coming in the middle of the night while yare are sound asleep, and never waking you up. Or it can seem like indigestion in the meddle of the day, and eventually go away, leaving no overt clues of its passage. Only a doctor can tell, so if something strange has happened to you, think about getting to a doctor to see if you can ignore the incident or whatever it was, of if it might mean something else that is a lot more serious. End of Life Blues

There are times in life when each of us needs assistance, if not for ourselves, then perhaps for someone we love or who we have been caring for lately. Stuff happens in life, and the worst of it happens during the last phase of life, and sometimes people find themselves in the hands of people they never expected to be with in their final moments. We’d all love to have family with us when it is our turn to depart life, but when death certainly nears, we are happy to have anyone take time to worry about our final minutes. We’ll take whichever angels are available to make our last minutes easier. All we pray for is for someone to hold our hand, to calm our fear and to sooth our panic and helplessness. With help, we may calm our inner devils long enough to thank our human angels for their heroic assistance, and to let them know that if there is a Heaven, and if we get there, they will certainly earn a free pass - if for no other reason than for the good words of your work that we will spread to officials of wherever we end up.

Dance Every Dance

In a report to subscribers, John Hopkins Medical Letter some months ago informed its readers that during the previous five years, the number of sexually transmitted diseases had jumped by 41 percent, primarily because seniors were more sexually active than ever before in recorded history, and so many of today’s seniors were not only sexually active, they were active with multiple partners. That is what doctors would call good news in disguise. While no doctor is every happy to see sexually transmitted diseases increase, it also meant that seniors were generally more healthy than in other decades, and felt able to do things that seniors of yore could only dream about.

While most of the seniors probably felt they were too old to have to worry about matters, they learned something that younger generations could have advised them about, had there been cross-generational discussions of sex. But, like everything else in life, eventually everything gets thrashed out and everyone moves forward. And, seniors whose partners are no longer alive, are learning that there can be beauty as well as pleasure in male/female relationships that begin at a certain age, and need nothing more than care and trust on the part of both partners to make their final years of life as happy as were the early years. But, it is - and everyone has to re-learn how today’s standards function - not the world of your grandparent’s day - but it works just fine anyway.

Bark Twice For A Speedy Recovery

When life levels a nasty blow on people, home confinement can seem as endless as a jail sentence. Life becomes unbearable. Everyone else is out there doing things. He or she is housebound. It is unbearable to many people and they feel isolated from everything in life they want to experience. They have never felt so alone. Enter a dog. Large or small, it makes no difference. The dog is brought in to see a person in a bed, or in a wheelchair, and it does not see isolation or despair, it sees a new friend, a new opportunity, someone to relate to and to play with.

For the many who are incapacitated by illness or accident and face a dubious recovery, a dog seeing a new friend for the first time may be the best thing available to bring this patient back toward a willingness to recover from catastrophe. The patient might not even realize this dog is therapy. In a bleak world of pain, doctors who probe and fuss, it is a great relief to see a dog who wants someone to play with him.

If the patient can throw a tennis ball to chase down, the game is on. If he can't, maybe he can pet a friend who keeps him company. If even that can't be done, well, dogs are inventive, and will think of something fun. And, patients who haven't smiled once since tragedy ruined their lives, grin at that silly creature on the bed beside him, and take the first long step back to re-entering the world again.

Dreaming of The Three Digit Club

The father of a woman who, with her own family with kids who were the age of our kids, was about to turn 99 years of age, in a senior residence along the eastern short of Delaware, and invited my wife and I to attend the festivities, since we have an oceanfront condo just a few miles to the south in Ocean City, Maryland. Turning 99 is pretty impressive, even in a home for the elderly, because most of us don’t live that long, or if we do, we aren’t greatly aware of it.

Her father was not only aware, he was ambitious to join the Three Digit Club - 100 years of age - and he figured if he was good enough to make the first 99 years, 365 more days would be a breeze. And, as a matter of fact, standing with the family members, it was easy enough to believe.

He was gracious, actively thanking everyone for showing up and bouncing around like that bouncing ball does on screen when they want the audience to sing along. We had known him somewhat, as a result of infrequent appearances at his daughter’s house during the years their kids and our kids were growing up. And, when the party was finally finished, my wife and I agreed that if anyone had a shot at the magic three figures club, it sure liked like he was a contender. Just 365 days away from the Three Digit Club.
